Charlie Smith
Charlie’s sculpture speak to a deep understanding and appreciation for each of his subjects, whether a robin caught in a brief moment of rest or a silverback gorilla in all his imposing glory, each is afforded the same attention and energy.
Charlie Smith is a British sculptor who has been creating wildlife and animal sculptures for UK and international collectors since his late teens. Now based in London, he produces original sculptures in clay and plasticine, which are cast in bronze as limited editions using the traditional lost-wax process.
Working from life wherever possible, Charlie travels throughout the UK and abroad to study animals in their natural environments. This firsthand observation informs sculptures that aim to capture not just anatomy, but the character and spirit of each subject. A long-standing relationship with his foundry ensures every bronze is finished to the highest standard.
Born in 1990 and raised on a stud farm in Dorset, Charlie developed an early connection to animals that continues to shape his work. At age 14, he began studying ceramics, selling a life-size horse’s head at his graduation exhibition - a pivotal moment that set the foundation for his career.
In 2021, Charlie was commissioned to sculpt a life-size portrait of Bo Obama for President Obama’s birthday. His work is now held in private collections across Europe, Africa, The Middle East and North America.
